Well established wild flower mix wins seed prize

Devon farmer Christopher Twose has won first prize in the Campaign for the Farmed Environment’s (CFE) Picture a Pollinator competition with a photo of his pollen and nectar annual flower mix, beating off over 85 other entries.

His prize is 1 ha of Basic Pollen & Nectar seed mix donated by Kings.

Competition judge Marek Nowakowski, an industry specialist in farm wildlife and biodiversity, was looking for the photo that showed a well established mix with a good range of flowers providing an excellent food source for on farm pollinators.

The quality of flower mixes was judged by the breadth of flower diversity within the photograph, the amount of flora within the field margin and the quality of the crop produced. Mr Nowakowski remarked that Mr Twose's mix would provide significant benefits to a wide range of on farm pollinators due to its quality, quantity and diversity.

Many competition entries highlighted well established, good quality flower mixes for pollinators and a diversity of floral species to deliver cross species and seasonal benefits through the year.

Established by CFE, the Picture a Pollinator competition was delivered in partnership with Syngenta and Kings as part of Operation Pollinator.
