Expertise from Kings and insight from Soil Life at Groundswell 2019

For the third consecutive year, Kings is delighted to be the official Cover Crop Partner to Groundswell and, with a new network of five Soil Life demonstration sites across the UK, the team can show best practice for the effective management of soils at farm scale.

Across both days of the event, taking place 26th - 27th June, the Kings team will showcase a diverse range of demonstration plots and walk visitors through the crops and concepts behind them.

One such plot will give further insight into how mycorrhiza and rhizobacter systems can be integrated within green cover to support soil health for crops within the wider rotation, while another will display a range of straights and mixes to demonstrate varietal characteristics. Visitors will also have the opportunity to explore a range of crop mixes that can support integrated pest management programmes to control nematodes in both cereal and root crop rotations.

Seminar: Cover crops for soil, water and the environment

Alongside a farmer and representatives from Affinity Water and FWAG East, Kings Eastern Technical Advisor, Paul Brown will hold a discussion around the increased use of cover crops and how to maximise their benefits while safeguarding soil health and water.

EFAs and Countryside Stewardship

For those interested in meeting Ecological Focus Area requirements, Kings will also exhibit mixtures that meet the increasingly popular EFA catch/cover crop options. In addition, there will be the opportunity to discuss key Countryside Stewardship options that bring benefits to soil, water, farmland birds and pollinators – bringing the integrated whole farm approach to life.

Speaking of the event, Kings sales manager, Richard Barnes explains, “The shift towards soil health becoming a key pillar of sustainable crop production has never been so prominent. As a result, there is an ongoing change in direction for farming policy, alongside a wider perspective from industry stakeholders as to how to best manage soil and water assets.

“At Kings, we work with growers across the UK and Europe, whether they are just starting their ‘journey’ to meet Ecological Focus Area (EFA) requirements or already have a clear strategy on how to improve soils to ensure increased resilience – and therefore profitability – for their farm business.

“With 20 plot demonstration plots on display, we’ll be able to showcase the wide ranging benefits associated with cover crops and help growers better understand how these might be interpreted on their own farm. As always, the team will be on hand to discuss every available option so we can help visitors fully understand what could work for them.”

By working closely with colleagues at SOYL and Frontier Agriculture, Kings are able to make innovative approaches accessible while ensuring that they meet grower requirements. With a trials network as part of Frontier’s 3D thinking programme (Discovery, Development and Demonstration), Kings is heavily involved in on-farm testing and the ongoing observation of cover crops.
