Helping growers manage their natural capital

Kings 2021 catalogue front cover

Alongside seed mixtures, technical advice, expert opinion and grower case studies, this year’s publication features a range of new and innovative products to help growers prepare for ongoing changes to policy, including the introduction of our new digital mapping tool, environment manager.

Manage your environmental projects in one place

With the industry’s focus shifting more and more onto the need to incorporate stewardship into the way arable businesses are run, support to ensure this is achieved in a sustainable and profitable way is crucial. In collaboration with Frontier Agriculture and SOYL, Kings has developed a digital tool to help land managers map and record their stewardship from their smart devices.

Kings sales manager, Richard Barnes says of the new tool, “Adhering to stewardship compliance requires evidence which can be time consuming. Scenes of paperwork and map drawing across the office desk, coupled with the added pressure of opting for new cropping choices and moving land to accommodate payments, are usually met with stress.

“Compiling this information online with the new tool alleviates these pressure points and simplifies the process of demonstrating and managing stewardship.”

New seed mixtures for 2021

The Kings team is continually developing and improving mixtures to enable growers to meet and exceed the demands of their stewardship agreements. Among the new mixes included in this year’s catalogue is the new IPM Flower Mix containing a range of key wildflower species known to support a host of beneficial insect species. This mix can be incorporated into Integrated Pest Management plans by both in field and headland margins.

Another mixture to join the Kings portfolio this year is Tall Wheat Grass; a useful alternative to reed canary grass with a canopy based on thick, winter hardy stems. This perennial grass mix has seen great success in trials and requires a nurse crop such as sorghum or triticale in year one.

Supplementary feeding

As well as an expansion of the specialist crop portfolio, Kings continues to offer tools to help farmers support farmland birds. “Farmland birds are especially vulnerable over the winter months and are often at risk of starvation,” Richard explains. “Supplementary feeding during the ‘hungry gap’ between December and April is now considered one of the key options in agri-environment schemes.”

Kings offers seed mixtures, Farmland Feeders and a Supplementary Feeding Booklet to help agreement holders with this option. Featuring a handy ID guide, the booklet allows for detailed recording to support growers with compliance requirements as they feed farmland birds through this vital period.
