Environmental land management
To build resilient and biodiverse farming systems, growers are increasing their focus on integrating environmental actions on farm. This activity can unlock new revenue streams through private and public funding opportunities while enhancing a farm’s natural capital for long-term resilience. Frontier offers the expertise and resources to help growers through this transition.

Navigating sustainable land management requires the right expertise. Frontier’s team of 70 BASIS-registered environmental advisors ensures growers receive trusted, practical support and advice.
Whether implementing stewardship schemes, integrating regenerative agriculture principles or developing a long-term environmental plan, our experts can provide tailored solutions that support farm businesses and the land.

Sustainability and profitability can go hand-in-hand. We help growers navigate publicly funded agri-environment schemes available across the UK to access funding opportunities for practices that align with their long-term environmental and business goals.
From supply chain partnership programmes, cross-sector landscape recovery initiatives such as Landscape Enterprise Networks, and water company partnerships, there are a wealth of funding options for growers to consider.
Frontier has its own range of grower contracts that reward environmental action and sustainable practice, and we’re always looking for new opportunities to help growers increase their earning potential.

With subsidy reform introducing a ‘payments by results’ approach to environmental stewardship, opportunities are emerging for growers. However, planning a scheme for the first time or adjusting existing agri-environment projects can be complex.
To support this transition, Frontier has developed a unique online environment manager tool, designed to integrate environmental management plans with crop production activity.
Developed with input from farming experts, the tool helps farmers, land managers and gamekeepers implement stewardship agreements, conservation projects and sporting activities, while also enabling the recording and monitoring of natural capital assets on-farm.
Available within Frontier’s MyFarm platform, it combines satellite imagery and interactive mapping, bringing together all environmental projects and crop production data in one accessible, easy-to-use system.
Other uses for the tool include:
- Countryside sports management
- Yard layout mapping
- Gateway mapping
- Overhead powerline mapping
- Plotting field layouts to manage farm productivity
- Rotation planning
- Ensuring location accuracy when recording observations on farm

From December to April, natural seed sources run low across the UK, leaving farmland birds vulnerable to starvation. Supplementary feeding helps them survive winter and enter spring in peak condition for breeding.
Evidence suggests that many bird species rely on these additional food sources, with growers and land managers seeing positive results for bird populations across their land when supplementary feeding has been actioned.
Frontier offers expert guidance and a tailored range of seed mixtures to support supplementary feeding programmes which meet environmental and countryside stewardship requirements and help support on-farm biodiversity.

With increasing pressure on UK farming to maximise land productivity, shoot managers are adapting to produce later-season shoot days using smaller areas of traditional game cover crops such as maize and straight kale. As a result, there is greater reliance on cover provided through environmental stewardship schemes.
Frontier has an extensive range of game cover straights and mixtures and our team of expert advisors can give tailored advice to meet both sporting and stewardship requirements.

Cover crops boost soil health, improve rotations and drive farm efficiency. As the focus on sustainable farming and soil resilience grows, more farmers are integrating them into their cropping plans.
Fast-growing and planted between cash crops, cover crops help improve soil structure, increase organic matter, retain vital nutrients and reduce pollution risks. Their agronomic benefits can also lead to higher yields and financial savings, making them a valuable addition to rotations.
Beyond field benefits, cover crops play a key role in agri-environment schemes, offering growers additional revenue opportunities while supporting sustainable land management.
Backed by our national trials programme and ongoing investment in innovation, Frontier offers tried and tested cover crop mixtures tailored to different systems, field sizes and locations.

Companion cropping delivers multiple benefits, from natural pest suppression and improved soil fertility to reduced fertiliser reliance. This technique has been widely adopted by growers to mitigate cabbage stem flea beetle damage in oilseed rape and is now gaining broader application across different cropping systems.
With companion cropping now included in the Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) in England, growers can be financially rewarded for integrating this approach into their rotations.
Frontier’s advisors provide expert guidance on selecting the right companion crop combinations, ensuring growers can maximise yields, improve soil health and optimise nutrient use efficiency.
